In advanced cognitive studies, researchers successfully held real-time, two-way conversations with individuals experiencing lucid dreams, which are dreams where the person realizes they are asleep and gains control over the storyline. While trapped in REM sleep, these test subjects were able to answer math questions and respond to sensory signals given by the researchers outside. Brain scans during these lucid states show a unique mix of normal REM sleep activity combined with awakened patterns in the parts of the cortex that handle self-awareness and mental control.
